How Do You Do Stencils?

Is an airbrush used with them or are can you use buttercream? Is there a trick to makinging them clean and neat?

I believe you can use and airbrush but you don't have to. There are tutorials on CC that show them using royal icing or even powdered cocoa/sugar. I was just wondering if you could use the stencils found at JoAnn Fabrics that are used on the walls.

I was wondering about those stencils at JoAnns/Michael's too. I wasn't sure if the cake stencils had more "give" to them for use on a round cake. I'll see if I can find the tutorials. Thanks
