What's the best ratio and/or recipe to make tires to stand up on a 3-D John Deere tractor cake? Do I need to make them early and let them dry out some before covering in fondant?

I made the regular recipe for rice krispie treats but omitted the butter. I made the tires a week ahead of time and let them dry. When I do it again - I will make them even further ahead and and after drying for several days I will go ahead and cover them in the fondant and apply the treads and have that out of the way before beginning the construction of the cake.
