For me, its currently a hobby that I absolutely adore I've gotten some orders from baking for others so I had to type up a price list of what all I can make. I'm much more a baker than a decorator or cake artist. My decorating skills are mediocre IMHO. I would like to have my kitchen licensed so that I can expand and sell to more people. I don't want it to get big, though, because I like working solo. Well...if I ever get married and have children they can become a part of my baking world.
For now...I'll just enjoy baking as gifts to give. Besides...I agree with Pudwick...baking keeps me sane
I'm just a hobbiest.
(well I sold ONE cake and made no profit -just charged for ingredients- but then relaized the whole thing about licensing etc. so stopped. I'm not really ready to become proffessional anyways.)
I decorate cakes as an hobby. I hope to have a cake business someday but for now i'm okay with decorating cakes for my family and friends.
Yep, Hobby. I don't have enough faith in my work to do It for cash! I've read too many horror stories on CC to attempt someones wedding. Family will still love me if its not perfect!
I am a hobbyist too. I LOVE cake, cupcake and cookie decorating. Some people have told me I should start a business, but I really have no desire to do so. While it is very flattering to hear people say that, I get tired of hearing it because they have NO IDEA what that would entail. Doing it as a hobby is already time consuming and stressful enough! I cannot imagine what it would be like if I opened a business. I know they mean well, but people who don't do it have no clue how much time it would take and how stressful having a business would be.
I am with TX Rose, I am doing it as a hobby, I don't have the money to do a bussines, or the confidence to do it as bussines, then I think on dealing with the not so nice people, the time that this bussines demands and ... no!!!no, no!!! I don't want that, I wouldn't get the fun I get now
Just a hobby. Not sure I would love it as much if I had to do it on someone else's time frame. Right now I get to make cakes whenever I want and if I'm not in the mood, well, then I'm just not in the mood.
I love coming up with my ideas and I write them all down and hope that one day I will have a reason to make them all.
I've never taken a class, I just watch videos, read, search books and recipes and practice. I learn by doing, trial and error. I take pictures of all my cakes, even the ones I don't like so much, and I make notes when something works or when it doesn't so I can remember what to do next time.
My husband just bought me a shiny new KitchenAid 600 series and I can't wait to have an opportunity to use it! He's convinced I should do this full time, but I'm happy just having it as my escape.
I just started taking classes a few months ago. I'm currently taking the fondant and gum paste class. I love it and it's a hobby. I bake cakes for my family.
I do it as a hobby but also wondering if anyone or their family has put on weight from the all the cakes, icing, cookies, etc. I also hope someday I can be as talented as everyone on CC. Love looking at everyones pictures and hoping I can do that. )
I've put on 40 lbs since I got really into the whole cake thing. I'm not sure it's all cake though, I also quit smoking during that time and I spent some time in a wheelchair and then some time after that barely able to walk, so I couldn't exercise as well as usual. During the same time period, my husband has gained 30 lbs (he also quit smoking and filled the void in his work breaks with little debbie snacks though).
Hobby. If it were a job I'm not sure I would love it as much. Even though I am a hairstylist and still love that. Some of these stories that people have to do deal with that are in business would kill it for me.

Sounds like my husband. He talks about turning it into a family business that our kids could inherit one day...that's a lot of pressure, to me.
Count me in hobby too, friends, family, neighbors, I started this spring of this year, don't do it as much as I would like to, boyfriend is picking in his cakes, and he gets cake/cupcaked out, so I usually share with the neighbors, one is a 5 yr. old little girl, and she just got a newborn baby brother on sept. 11th, so I will have him when he is old enough for goodies too, LOL...
I do it as a hobby as well. I just started making cakes and decorating in the Spring so I'm still fairly new to it all. It really helps me relieve stress and I've been told that I've missed my calling but I've been a little unsure about going professional for the same reasons as everyone else. The more I think about it though, and the harder the engineering classes get, the more I want to do it as a profession. Who knows, it could still be just as fun!
I do it as a hobby. I use whatever excuse I can find to bake, treats for my son's soccer game, baby showers at work, etc. Everyone I know tells me I should start my own business. I don't think it would be fun anymore, but I wouldn't have to force my family and friends to eat all the cake, I could have people coming to me willing to pay for the opportunity!
Hobby baker here, too! After years of searching unsuccessfully for a legal avenue, I gave up. Then, I read the "free cakes for kids" article and my whole world opened up!!
I partnered with a local women's shelter so that I could get my "fix". They think I'm just being generous, but those women (and kids) have no idea how much I need them!!
