Preserving Fondant/gum Paste Characters?? Lacquer Spray??

I have the most adorable characters from my baby shower cakes and I would LOVE to preserve them.
Has anybody found a good way to do this?
The figures are both gum paste & fondant. I have a small amount of both unfinished substances that I'm going to try a spray lacquer on... ?? Has anybody tried this??
Help! I don't want to get rid of these cute little guys!!
Ideas/Suggestions??

they should keep just fine as they are. but you can spray them with varnish if you want.
