I have seen these cakes lately with the stripes in the fondant not on it... I tried to line up the colors and then roll out the fondant but the stripes are all can I do this and have the stripes clean and straight?

Perhaps they are painted on?

I don't know if this would work on a larger scale, to cover a cake...but for the towel that accompanies my pool cake, I lined up colored snakes (rolls) on parchment paper, covered with another piece of parchment, and pressed down a few times & side to side, with a fondant smoother. When they were nicely joined, I cut both ends straight.
