can you put a cooled cake still in the pan in the freezer?

Yep sure can. Best bet is to remove from pan, place wax paper in pan then return cake to pan; place all in a plastic bag. If storing longer than 1 week wrap well in double layer of plastic wrap, then the plastic bag.

I did it recently for to make petite fours. I baked in a jelly roll pan with parchment lining, and when the pan was cool enough to not melt the plastic wrap, I wrapped it up real good with two to three laywers of plastic wrap and popped it in the fridge for the better part of a week.
