I wnt to make a passion fruit filling but it calls for vanilla bean but the supermarkets around here do not sell Vbeans, so does putting in extract make a hugh difference!???
Wholefoods is just to far to go for 2 beans in a jar!
I guess this question will go for any recipe that calls for a vanilla bean.
It will be fine with extract - I only use the beans if I'm making something special as they are expensive. A good alternative is vanilla bean paste - like very thick extract but also has the little black seeds so it looks like you used a real bean, not sure if you have that in the US though.
They sell vanilla bean paste at Williams-Sonoma...I use it in all my vanilla flavored goods. It runs about $11 for an 8oz jar.
Edited to correct the size of the jar. It is a 4oz jar of vanilla bean paste for $11. Sorry for the confusion.
I use vanilla bean paste a lot... on of my favorite flavorings (amazing when added to a meringue buttercream) and a cheaper than using fresh beans... Surfasonline.com sells quart bottles of neilsen massey paste.
