How Do I Use Gum Arabic Solids?

I know that gum arabic solution is used to give a shine to gumpaste flowers can be added to royal icing for stength in extension work. I want to practice my extension work but I have the solid gum arabic. Can I grind it and use as normal?
Need some insite here, please.
