Hi, I recently posted questions about a drum cake (I am making one similiar to this) and thanks for all the help but i came to a speed bump on how to make the silver parts on the sides? Should i just take an easier route?

Hey,

I'm a total newbie too but I think I would paint the peices with silver dust. Gotta have the right dust tho.

Here's a good video that explains a bit.

I would use dowels covered in fondant or gumpaste and then painted with lusterdust. Please post this when you are done! I'd LOVE to see it!

I like catharper's idea... dowels with gumpaste/fondant and painted with luster dust (mixed with vodka). Good luck!

Just make sure you tint the fondant or gumpaste gray first that way it takes the silver better.

That's right, I made a crown and did a white one first with silver dust...didn't look too great. Did a second using grey fondant/gumpaste and presto! A silver crown!

You mean the silver pieces that are attached to the "dowels" and the red sides for this cake? I'd make that part the gum paste/fondant and attach that to the cake. Don't see how you could use covered cake for such small pieces...

I agree with the PP, do the side peices with dowels and gumpaste, it'll make your life much easier!
