Butter Questions

Am I the only one who thinks using unsalted butter then adding salt to the recipe is a bit odd?
From what I gather, salt is added to butter to act as a preservative and unsalted is 'fresher' (and costs more) which makes sense.
I rarely use the unsalted kind, and cut back the amount of added salt required with great results.
Any thoughts?
