I am making the mad hatter's hat from Alice in Wonderland. I have seen several examples here on cc and I'm all set for my design. My problem is that I want to cover the hat in buttercream instead of fondant. I want to do the brim of the hat in fondant so I can curl it up a bit and let it dry.

My biggest fear is getting the buttercream color to match the fondant.
So here is what I am thinking.

I was going to make the brim of the hat out of the same color fondant as the band that goes around his hat. Put lots of gum-tex powder in it and roll up the edges . Once it dried, I was wondering if I can cover the top layer of the brim in buttercream? I've never thought about painting fondant with buttercream before but that would give me the top of his brim the same color as the hat and the underside of the hat would be darker which I think would be pretty cute.

Thoughts, suggestions...can I do that with buttercream on fondant? Any suggestions on how to apply the buttercream to the fondant once it's dried?

Thanks in advance!
