i just stumbled across my favorite "new thing." i was in the ribbon/card/wrapping paper aisle at walmart and was looking for riboon as well as something to cover my cardboard cake circle with. i usually use fondant or wrapping paper (wax paper goes underneath the cake to prevent ink bleeding from the paper) but i discovered i could use something else...PLASTIC TABLECLOTHS (the cheap, throwaway kind)! they are cheap, food can go right on them, no oil spots, they wipe off easily...the list could go on. i can find them in any color as well as tons of patterns! i double or triple them up and you don't see the cardboard at all. it really helps to add a the look of the overall effect and you don't have to waste fondant! after i cover with the tablecloth, i add ribbon around the edge and even some jewels/stickers, etc.
