What Are Whoopie Pies?

What are whoopie pies and how do you make them? I keep hearing that they are sooooooo good. And if eveyone thinks there soooooo good then of course I want to try to make some!!! icon_biggrin.gif But I don't even know what they are! icon_confused.gif

Whoopie Pies are a phenomenon from Maine and PA (PA Dutch/Amish make them).

Traditionally, they are a dark chocolate cake about 4" in diameter and a soft marshmallow/buttercream filling sandwiched between two of them. Not to be confused with Moon Pies who have a stiffer less flavorful filling between two graham crakers and then dipped in chocolate

I made some last night, but I hate crisco and veg shortenings so I made them with butter instead. I just got some Black Cocoa, so that made them really rich and dark.
