Can Rkt Be Covered With Candy Clay Instead Of Fondant?

I am making a Little Einsteins Rocket out of RKT, and since it is all red, I thought about covering it with candy clay. I hate the taste of Wilton fondant and do not want to deal with having to dye MMF red if the red candy melts would work. Does anyone know if this will work, and if so, could you pass along some tips to me? I've never worked with RKT or candy clay (I always tend to experiment with new techniques with my sons' birthday cakes!)

I used candy melts on my tinkerbell tree trunk, in my photos, and they work just fine on the RKT. In fact they are what held the RKTs to the PVC pipe because they wouldn't stick on their own.
