If you were at www.sugaredproductions.com Sharon has a DVD (boxes and bows - highly recommend it) with how to do the gumpaste lid for an open box type cake.

Do you want your box top raised or off to the side? Some people use styrofoam (see instructions on CC for "hatbox cake"). I use cake on a cake board and recently did the gumpaste lid on a heart cake.

When I use cake I just put in regular drinking straws to support the cakeboard of the "box top" then drive bamboo skewers down through the cake and cake board and into the straws. If you are using fondant and cover your top before setting it then use your straws for support but put in the skewers upside down (pointed side up) and you can drive them into the cake from the bottom side up. This is what has worked for me but I'm sure there are other methods.

Hope this makes sense and helps.
