So I am about to do my first tierd cake, do I have to use the dowles if it only has two tiers? Any other suggestions for what I need to keep in mind while making it?

Yes! Always dowel! You just want to be safe. It would not be fun to have 1. top tier squish bottom tier or 2. top tier slide off, etc. Please dowel!!

Yes, you need dowels. You might be able to get by with straws instead if the top tier is small.
