I'm beginning to plan my daughter's barnyard birthday cake. We'll be with family in another state, so time will be short. I was wondering how far in advance you can make fondant or gumpaste accents? (Mine would be flat farm animals.)

You can make it a day ahead or longer. It depends on your location. If you are planning to attach it on a curved cake, I would make it, let it rest for a while and then attach it on the side of the cake.. This way, it takes the form of the curve.
