I've seen people cut it out with a guide (printed out letters).

I print out the style and size letters I need in a Word document, tape wax paper over the letters on cardboard and outline/trace over them with royal icing or melted chocolate pieces. When they are firm attach to to the cake. You can attach sucker sticks, wooden popsicle sticks or toothpicks, etc.... to the backs with icing or melted chocolate to make the letters stand up on the top of the cake. icon_smile.gif

Welcome clemason to cake central! You're gonna love it here!
I haven't done the type of lettering you're asking about, but I have heard of it done the way teresa13 just said she does.

hi and welcome to cc. I print the letters out on the computer using the size and font i want onto cardstock (regular computer paper will do too) Then I cut the letters out, place them on top of my rolled out fondant and trace them with a sharp knife. HTH
