How do I prevent my fondant/gumpaste 3d figures from cracking as they are drying?

It sounds like you're already using a 50/50 gumpaste/fondant mix. This really helped with the cracking, for me. Are you in a very dry area? I'm in a very humid area, so my figures never dry completely.
Don't have any answers for you, but this will give you a bump.
