I did a cake a short time ago where I piped royal icing onto a sugar molded bear:

However, doing that piping was a pain! The icing didn't want to stay put, it kept on falling off. I eventually got it done, but I have another of a similar design coming up & am hoping someone might have some advice for me. How can I make sure the RI sticks the first time? My DH suggessted using some sandpaper & roughing up the surface just a bit, to give it something to cling to. Would this work? Or is there anything else that anyone can suggest? TIA!!

Why not just make the bear from cake and pipe b'cream instead?

If you must do it on molded sugar it sounds to me like your RI was too thick. Did you try thinning it down any when you had problems w/it? Use some Karo syrup or piping gel instead of liquid to thin RI....and do it a drop or two at a time....not spoonfuls.
