I am making a beach cake and need sand. I have used vanilla wafers, but would really like a little lighter color. Unfortunately, I need grocery store or walmart ingredients - 1 1/2 hour drive to decorating store.

Any ideas out there?

Also, my wilton brown and cake craft gel colors tend to give a pinkish tint to my fondant (works great for skin color), but I would like to get a better match to the sand ( a little more of a true sand color, maybe more on the yellowish side).

Any ideas? Thanks for anyone who might be able to help.

I made sand on a pirate cake recently, and I used crushed graham crackers, mixed with light brown sugar, and some organic cane sugar. The organic sugar is very glittery looking (is that even a word??), so it gave it a nice appearance.
