I'm finally breaking down and starting to spend real money on cake supplies, so I can create cakes that look good. My next big purchase is going to be stocking up on great dusts, now that I'm learning how to make gumpaste flowers.

So, what should I buy? I'm thinking about a dozen or so. What kind, luster, petal, shimmer, etc? And what colors are your faves? I'm kind of going for a "basic" set, knowing that I will add in the future.

Also, any recommendations on paint brushes to use with?

you need a bit of everything! that why im generally trying to buy as i need (with a bit of planning to make postage worth it).
get a couple of green petal dusts, so you can mix greens for leaves.
get the primary colours in petal dusts for your flowers.
silver and gold lustre dust
a 'white' pearl dust - you can pearlise more colours without it looking too white.

aubergine and jade, and pink, are good for leaves too, the ones with a bit more colour in them.
a blue pearl dust will look better on blue fondant that the white will, but id only buy that if i knew i had a blue cake coming up. colour specific things!
