I would like to make a purse cake for my bff's bday. I have never carved a cake before. What is a good recipe for a dense cake. Thanks!

Any pund cake recipe or box mix will work. I make 3-D cakes with 1/2 pound cake and 1/2 any other flavor mixed otgether.

Hi!

Wow, two newbies in one post. icon_biggrin.gif Welcome to CC both of you.

I would use the WASC recipe for your first try at carving a cake. It is dense, can be baked ahead of time, allow you plenty of time to carve & decorate. It tastes powerfully good at the 3-day mark, so make sure you allow those 3 days for the flavors to blend.

If you want chocolate cake, Toba Garret's chocolate cake is a good, dense recipe. Altho, I have had trouble carving it if it gets too crumbly. (could be I might've overbaked icon_confused.gif too.) The chocolate cake on the back of the Hershey pan is decent for carving, but I've never tried a taller cake like a purse cake.

Also, did you read the post on how to make a purse cake?
