ooo i love those oatmeal cream pies..they are kind of similar to whoopie pie =] so good
That market stand I went to today sells oatmeal ones. I opted for the devil's food, always my favorite. If it's chocolate, I'm there. Early.

Someone mentioned these, so...
"Wicked Whoopie Pies" originated here in Maine, and she still has her shop in Gardiner, ME. I have to hand it to the lady for sticking to it... she must really have a love of the whoopie pie.
I could never make whoopie pies full time or I'd go completely INSANE... When I make them (easy as they are, it's drone work) I want to throw them against the wall!!! Not to mention each Whoopie Pie is about 750 calories a piece... no thanks!
They are a smart item to make though ~ they will probably always be popular. People love all things ooey and gooey... everyone except me, that is. Ok, I'm finished.
So I made Pumpkin Whoopies tonight and they went over really well with the family. I absolutely loved them, but pumpkin is one of my favorites! The cakes tasted just like a really good pumpkin bread and I filled with cream cheese icing.
I used ice cream scoops for everything (batter and icing) which made them simple to make.
Oh, yeah, you can knock them out in no time, especially when you have a recipe which uses cake mix to make them. They're a great after-school activity for kids, too.
My niece (who was my first cake decorating student) has 2 daughters who are always pestering her to let them bake something. I gave her the cake mix cookies recipes that were posted here, and they went to town, adding coconut, chips, pretzel chunks, you name it. That's all they want to do when they come here, too.
Tomorrow I'm going to present her with the recipe for cake mix whoopies. Better her girls be baking in her kitchen, not making a mess in mine.

Hi K2cakes! I see you are from Maine as well!
Well, here are a couple of recipes I've had for a long time--got 'em from an "old lady." Except now some might call ME an old lady. Hee hee.
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
5 tbs baking cocoa
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking power
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup milk 2 tsp vanilla
Cream shortening, eggs, and sugar. Combine cocoa, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add flour mixture to the shortening mixture alternatively with the milk and vanilla. Mix until combined. Drop by tablespoons of batter onto cookie sheet. Leave room because they spread. Bake at 350 for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool a couple of minutes and remove to racks to cool completely. This makes cake-like cookies. When they're cool, you stuff 'em.
Here are two different fillings. The first is basically mock whipped cream.
5 tbs flour
1 cup milk
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
Cook milk and flour until thick. Cool to room temperature. Cream shortening and sugar. Add milk mixture and beat until fluffy. If you want to add flavors, you can, but it used to be that no one did.
Another one I think is easier:
1 cup milk
5 tsp flour
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
Combine all ingredients and beat until fluffy. Stash in fridge until ready to use.
Oh, here's another whoopie pie recipe and filling.
2 eggs
1 cup milk
2.5 cups flour
2/3 cup shortening
1.25 cups sugar
1/2 cup baking cocoa
3 tsp baking power
1/2 tsp salt.
Cream shortening, eggs, and sugar. Add rest of ingredients and mix well to combine. Bake 350 for 10 to 15 min. Remember, they spread.
Filling
2 egg whites
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 tsp vanilla
Beat egg whites until stiff. And rest of ingredients and beat until fluffy. Stuff the cookies when they're fully cooled.
This last recipe, I don't know, the filling's kinda sweet. See, over the years I've noticed that whoopie pie fillings have gotten sweeter and sweeter and sweeter! You might as well stuff 'em with buttercream! And actually, I think some people are doing that. Me, I prefer somewhat less sweet. Believe me, it is still sweet, but I'd actually like to TASTE the whoopie pie and not have my tastebuds completely assaulted by sugar!
As soon as you stuff your whoopie pies, you must wrap them individually in plastic wrap. That is how they are always purchased in Maine. The reason for this is that the cookies are very CAKEY and get kinda gooey. If you leave a bunch of pretty whoopie pies sitting on a nice plate, when you pick one up, you'll leave a 1/8 inch cake layer behind on the plate! That's just gipping yourself out of some cake, isn't it? Unless you wanna lick the plate, I guess, which on occasion I have been known to do.
So....why would anyone WANT these dang things you ask?? Well, try 'em yourself and see what you think. Hee hee. They're gooey and messy. You kinda unwrap them partially and eat 'em like a messy falafel if they're over-gooey! But even if they're not over-gooey, you're still gonna have a mess on your fingers. Which you can lick off bit by bit.
Here in Maine whoopie pies are BIG. I never did see a 3-inch whoopie pie ever! At least 4 inches, but really 5 inches is much more the norm. Well, however much your cookies spread out on the sheets I guess, LOL!
Hope this helps! Like I said...........just try 'em........ hehehehehe
These sound delish. Would anyone happen to to the recipe for the red velvet, oatmeal and pumpkin? I have got to try these and they sound so good. Pretty please can I have the recipes? I promise I will eat them right! Well for a pregnant chick I will propably eat like 10 of them and gain 50 lbs. LOL

Hello, right back at you I sell my vegan whoopie pies in two stores right now and for some reason they FLY right off the shelves. It's rediculous. I've been wanting to phase out of them, but they are so popular. I don't make much off of them selling wholesale, so to me it's too much work. Maybe if I made them in cut-out shapes (and sell direct to customers) I wouldn't be so bored with making them.
i have a recipe for chocolate whoopie pies posted to the recipe section:
http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-7005-2-Chocolate-Whoopie-Pies-Cakesters.html
enjoy!
So has anyone ever tried to decorate the top of these? Is it possible?
Jescapades I have tried that recipe and my boys & I love it - thanks for sharing.
Karema, as a pregnant woman you have earned the right to eat as many whoopie pies as you want. After all, you are eating for two!! That's the whole point of pregnancy: Stuffing your face. Hee hee. I know I did when I was pregnant.
As for red velvet, oatmeal, and pumpkin, try the cocoa ones first. Those are the most traditional ones, and they'll give you a feel of what a whoopie pie is! Then you can easily experiment and change the cake-like/cookie recipe. To be honest, I have never seen a red velvet whoopie pie or oatmeal whoopie pie here in Maine, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be yummy! Most often I see the chocolate with white vanilla filling or occasionally peanut butter filling, and in the fall when the pumpkins are coming out of our ears, I see a fair amount of pumpkin, some with white vanilla filling and some with cream cheese filling. But whatever, you owe it to yourself and your baby to indulge!
K2cakes, congrats on your ongoing business, whoopie pies and all! I would like to PM you sometime if that is OK.
Awesome pic playingwithsugar!
As for decorating these, on top, well, I haven't seen that. But how would you wrap them then? They usually have to be wrapped because of their stickiness.
Here is Ann Bouchard's whoopie pie recipe as given by herself. She's the lady who owns Wicked Whoopie Pies here in Maine and who, I think, started or at least gave a good push to the whoopie pie craze that is traveling across the country. http://www.recipezaar.com/Wicked-Whoopie-Pies-162298
Hope this helps!
We make several "creme filled" cookies and they always sell out withing hours of coming out of the kitchen.
We make oatmeal cream pies, Banana nut pudgy pies, red velvet, pumpkin, and chocolate whoopie pies. We sell them for $3.00 each.
After making the pumpkin I can't wait to attempt a banana nut whoopie! Thanks for the idea!
Hey Chass ! Yes they are only bigger and better homemade! Of course my oatmeal cream pies are made from an oatmeal cookie!
In PA, the popular flavors are choc, red velvet, and pumpkin...I personally prefer the pumpkin (less sweet).
Also, if the big size of the maine ones scare you....you can just make smaller drops of batter. I make them from minis (about 1/2 dollar size) to about 2-3 inches. I have seen them palm sized and even plate sized though. I think the plate size is definately a WOW! factor thing. You should prbably have a group for that size one!
I have made them both ways. But in PA when my MIL buys them they all have the same filling.
I like the cream cheese filling..also i added maple syrup to the crm cheese once to have pumpkin whoopie pies with maple cream cheese filling..mmmmm!
I've never had an oreo cakester, so I don't know if they're like whoopie pies. I googled them and they look a little like a whoopie pie, but so neat and perfect. I never had a neat and perfect whoopie pie. Wonder if it tastes as good as a messy one!
I read most of the responses, but I didn't understand if we can just use a regular cake recipe and drop it in scoops onto the baking pan.
Acookieobsession: that maple cream cheese filling almost made me pee my pants it sounds so good!!!
I'm trying the chocolate ones tonight. But the pumpkin one the cream cheese frosting sound divine. How do you make these? I can make those tomorrow right?
Does anyone have a recipe for these? Are they easy? I see they are messy, and that's a good thing for my kind of baking!! I may try them for hubby's boss
HeidiCrumbs and chassidyg, there are some good recipes already posted in this thread. Enjoy!
Karema, let us know how you made out and if any whoopie pies survived the night.
K2cakes, congrats on your ongoing business, whoopie pies and all! I would like to PM you sometime if that is OK.
Mellee~ you can PM me.
is there a recipe for using a cake mix to make these??
I've seen them online, but don't have one. A quick google search and you will definitely find one.
You honestly don't need a cake mix though. The recipes I have tried have all been "quickbread" type recipes. You just dump and mix...super simple.
.....................................
Here is the pumpkin recipe I used for those that asked for one.
