MARCH 2009 THROWDOWN *****THEME: FOOD*****

The two competitors worked very hard and did an outstanding job on these cakes!! Both look so realistic!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Please take a look, pick your favorite and PLACE YOUR VOTE.

CONTESTANT A: BOWL OF SOUP
Cherry cake with whipped cheesecake filling carved inwards to taper, iced in IMBC and covered in homemade fondant. A "snake" of fondant was wrapped around the top layer to make the bowl's indent before covering the whole thing in fondant. The bottom of the bowl was painted with brown food coloring, then layers of fondant carrots, peas, green beans and noodles were alternated with layers of homemade piping gel lightly tinted with brown. The spoon is a 50/50 fondant gumpaste mixture cut from a template and laid over a real spoon to dry. A gumpaste tool with a ribbed pattern was used to intend the end and it was then painted in silver lusture dust to make it look like silverware.

CONTESTANT B: SANDWICH AND CHIPS ANYONE?
The bread is cut from 12x12x2 cake pans i cut two slices one for the top piece of bread and one for the bottom piece of bread and than covered in fondant. The crust is a separate piece of fondant cut the width of the bread and than glued to the sides. The lettuce, tomatoes, lunch meat, pickles, olives and chips are all fondant mixed with gumtex. For the lettuce, chips and bread crust, i used edible dusting powders to shade it for a little bit of depth.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU BOTH thumbs_up.gif

OH MY GOSH! This is by far the hardest throwdown to vote for to date. The are both excellent cakes. You wouldn't even think the soup is a cake, it is so real. The sandwhich is just as cute as can be. It all most came down to eeny meeny miny moe (and yes, I do revert to childhood when I can't make up my mindicon_smile.gif ). But in the end I went with the soup. It just looks so real. But I still love the sandwich. You both win!

I always try to vote, but rarely take time to post a reply in the thread. This time I had to say that this was the hardest one yet. The two were so close. I really had a hard time with this one.

Had to go with the soup simply because if you said this is a picture of a bowl of soup I would believe it. The sandwich is uber-cute though and I bow down to both contestants because you have mad skills.

I'm amazed at the standard of both entries and so inspired, duff should watch out you both trump him completely... and I LOVE duff! I found it really hard to vote and it was probably the crisps (sorry chips) that did it for me but by about 1% they were both absolutely fabulous. Well done x

I would say they both are awesome in their own rights and both have done outstanding jobs. But if realizm is what we are looking for I would have to votte soup. It definitely looks so real to me. Not prettie or more difficult to make; just more realistic to me. And I'm thinking that's the goal here. Right?
