When I make a ball cake that needs to feed more people, I usually carve it myself. I make three cake of 1" size difference. (for example a 5, 6& 7) I then slice them all in half and assemble as follows:
5", 6", 7". 7", 6" 5"
So far it has worked for me. On larger cakes (8, 9, 10) I make an extra 5" so I can use it to round out the top of the cake.

Thanks everyone, I was more looking for something cute as far as the all star theme more than anything, sorry, didn't really make that clear. I'm not a big basketball fan and am just drawing a blank.

i saw a cake with similar idea at a birthday party, it was a basketball cake placed on top of a sheet cake that was designed to look like a backboard... the backboard is where you could write happy birthday and maybe decorate it with little stars and #1 symbols (for first birthday/#1 allstars type thing)
