Today I'm in my walmart and Betty Crocker cake mixes went from $0.98 to $1.25 a box. A 27.5% increase. icon_eek.gif

You think that is expensive...Here in our regular grocery stores Duncan Hines and Betty Crocker are $3.79 each regular price!!! Now I won't pay that so I wait for them to go on sale at 10 for $10.00 or 2 for $3.00 and then I buy several cases!

I did! No one else is lowering their prices in the recession.... certainly not cheaper to bake a cake! My local supermarket sells cake mixes for atleast $2.25... or more. Atleast butter is dropping for now.

I started buying my cake mix in bulk - 20kg. bags for $74.00. It's a lot cheaper than buying individual boxes, and I (most!) always have it in stock - takes a lot longer to run out!! icon_biggrin.gif I think that a lot of the price is in the packaging. thumbsdown.gif

kiddiecakes, walmart is definitely the lowest cost on these around here. There's another grocery that sells the cake mixes for close to $3/box. Always ticked me off when I'd send hubby to the store to get a couple of mixes for me ... he'd go to the expensive store and spent $6 on two cake mixes that I could have gotten for $1.86 at walmart icon_mad.gif (back when they were $0.93 each). I'm scared to see what that other store is selling them for right now!

If you catch a sale at Safeway they have been having "buy 2 get 3 free." Now, the original price is almost $2, but that means that I am getting 5 cake mixes for $4. Pretty good deal. Just watch in the ads for a sale and go and stock up.

I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure of your stores in the US, but I buy my cake mix at Bulk Barn.

at my nearest walmart regular price BC mix is $1.18 - and they only carry choc & white.
at my local supermarket regular price cake mix (DH. BC, PB) are $2.19-$2.59 per box.

i usually wait until they go on sale 10/$10, 2/$3 or bogo.

Indydebi, Kroger has kept Betty Crocker mixes at .99 cents for several months now. And about once every month or so they have a manufacturer's coupon 3/$1.00 off making them $.67 cents each. I know there is a Kroger in Martinsville, but not sure how close one is to you...

You know flour eggs and butter have all gone down in price pretty dramatically around here in the last couple of months.. If you started baking from scratch you'd be MAKING more money icon_wink.gif

I'm just glad that butter has finally gone down. and milk....kiddos drink a lot of that, and when it was almost $4.00 per gallon I'd actually have to limit their milk intake.

I make the real butter cream icing and so glad butter prices are back to normal.

Do you have a Gordon's Food Service (GFS) near you, or any other restaurant supply store? I have never used GFS brand, but I always see it there. Good Luck!

I thought cake mixes were expensive up here...$2.23 the other day for BC. I guess I can drive the 45 miles to the military base and pay $1.20, but gas is $2.36. Hmmmm. It is ridiculous.

I guess I'm not shocked. The prices went up here months ago & it annoyed the crap out of me!! When they were on sale everywhere else Valentine's week ($.89 & $.99) I price matched every day that week & you should see my supply. Then I sent dh to walmart, told him to price match 4 mixes & did he, NO! So, I hear ya indydebi!! My dh would do the exact same thing, why? So he didn't have to fight the walmart crowd.

Wow, gas is $2.36 in Alaska?!? I thought it would be cheaper there since you guys have your own oil! And I for one am so happy that milk has gone down too! It used to be like .20 away from $5.00 and that was a quick price increase too! But I haven't seen a significant price change in the eggs & butter. They are still on the high side from when the gas was going crazy high. I just pray for all of us to make it through this trying economic times icon_smile.gif

I literally just walked in the door from Ralphs/ Krogers and started complaining to my husband that I didnt quote enough for the cake I am making for Sunday. I got them 2 for 4.00 (DH) which is cheaper than Albertsons but still way too much. Im going to have to check Wallmart. At least trader Joes has eggs for 1.49 icon_smile.gif

I like the box mix and doctor it up a bit. Walmart is supposed to have DH on sale for Easter. Maybe it is BC, not sure. It is crazy how much things go up. I like the convenience of the boxes instead of the big 50 lb bag. They always keep fresh and easy to carry about. DH have that anti walmart gene.

The best price I have found for BC mixes are .98 at WinCo. The store opened about a year and the price for these hasn't changed! Knock on wood. I would wait for the 10 for 10 deals but haven't had one anywhere in forever. So if you have a WinCo nearby, try there!

I also found that their boxes of brand named pudding is at least 10 cents cheaper!
