Or does anyone else come here for validation? I don't know why I keep trying to outdo myself but I have this need to make each cake better than the last. When I post a cake here, I keep coming back to the computer to see what my fellow creators think. It's like an addiction once the photo is posted. If you guys like it, I'm on a cake high. If you don't... I start wondering what I could have done differently.
Am I alone in this little quirk?
LOL. I'm here to get to a point where I can someday know enough to actually decorate a cake worthy of being uploaded!

Yeah what she said!
Whereas I do my best to make each cake better than its predecessors, I do not seek the validation that so many others need..
I suppose it is nice to be validated, but I don't come here for it. As long as the customer likes their cake, I'm satisfied. Unless my email tells me that a new comment was posted, I don't usually go back to the photo.
Besides that...the cakes of mine that have rec'd the most comments/saves are the ones that I thought were nothing so special. It just depends on what else is on the home page at the same time I guess.

I like to have my fellow decorators here like my work. I especially love it if someone puts one of my pictures in their favorites. But I also love to have the customer love their cake, and I like it, too, when my husband likes my cakes. Some of us are just people pleasers and there's nothing wrong with that.
Let's be honest... If no one on this site cared what people thought, no one would post their photos.
EVERYONE likes to be complimeted....I think "It's good for the soul!"
I am a lowly newbie and have only begun to get semi-decent at cake decorating, and I can't wait to get good enough to get some "bragging rights" and post my pics.
I guess I too come here for validation. I do not sell alot of the things I make because I do it mainly for friends, family, and just because I am addicted to it. Those things I do sell get rave reviews so I know they are good. But I like to recieve validation from others who have the same eye for "our" details!
I live with a husband who doesn't really understand the concept of the whole "art" thing involved with decorating. I also live with two boys - one of these being a teenager. They do not always tell me how it really is! At times I can't tell how my teenager really feels because of the teenager sarcasm coming out.
So, yes, I guess if it comes right down to the heart of the matter, I do come here for validation!
I think that the reason I want to see what people think is because I usually put in a lot of work on the cake and my two kids and my husband are the only souls that see it. It feels more worth while if I share the picture with ya'll at CC. That might be shallow, but it's the truth.

LMAO...ME TOO
As a teacher of cake decorating, I post photos to get an idea of what people are interested in trying to do. If I post a photo, even though I think it is great, if no one responds to it then I chuck that idea as not something students would be interested in learning.
When a photo is saved, it does not always mean it is because they did a fantastic job of decorating....it means that person would like to try duplicating something on that cake. I personally never save a cake just because it is beautiful, I do leave comments for them though.
No, you are definitely not alone in that..............I think a lot of us here, especially us 'newbies' are here to learn and to get some validation.
I am especially working on trying to comment on more, and especilally all the new photos of the day, because I know how good it feels when I see someone took the time to look at my photos and post a comment.
It doesn't take long to say "good job!" And who doesn't want to hear that?
When a photo is saved, it does not always mean it is because they did a fantastic job of decorating....it means that person would like to try duplicating something on that cake.
I do that, too. I recently had a cake to make and I saved 4 or 5 cakes in my favs that had something on them that I wanted to duplicate. They were inspirational for that one cake. I no longer need those and I thought about deleting them out of my favs. I didn't, though. I didn't want to disapppoint someone by lowering that number! Isn't that funny? The cakes are great whether they're in my favs or not. I just don't think I'll be making that particular thing anytime soon and now since I've done it I can do it again without reference. Funny that it occurred to me it would hurt someone's feelings when I wouldn't mean it that way at all. A great cake is a great cake. Period. Favs or not.

"just because it is beautiful" <-- That's the same thing in my book. A "beautiful" cake is a cake that I would consider using for inspiration (never duplication) on a future cake. IMO
Over 30 years ago I took a Basic Wilton cake decorating course and made all of our family's cakes. I loved it while I was doing it but over the years I somehow lost interest in it. I would like to take refresher classes but I now live in a rural area, and the closest classes are over an hour away......and that's ONE way.... So I'm on my own, with your help...lol.
Now that I have 5 grandkids and with the economy like it is, I decided I could help my kids save money if I started making all of the birthday cakes again. So I bought all new Wilton tips, pans, some yearbooks, supplies, etc. and made my first birthday cake (again...lol) on Valentine's Day for my grandson's 10th birthday party. He had 2 cakes, one was a chocolate, 11x15 regular sheet cake and decorated only with borders and writing. The other one were vanilla cupcakes shaped into a bowling pin, with red fruit rollups around the neck of the pin, because he had his party at our local bowling alley. Both of them were pretty simple so not much talent needed.....whew!
I come here to this website, and Wilton's, daily to get ideas and inspiration. You bakers are all awesome! I love your pictures that you post, and if you come here for "validation", here is one future "proud of my cakes" baker who respects your talent and skills! Keep up the fantastic and inspiring cakes that you create! You have my upmost respect!

Let me clarify that. I see beautiful wedding cakes made with fondant, painted with silver and gold, embilished with gum paste. The cake looks beautiful to me...but it is not my style at all. I decorate with buttercream only, it is me, and I love working with it, and the end results. Some cakes which I think are beautiful just don't fit my style. I like to acknowledge to them, they do fantastic work, it just isn't something I care to work with.
I do feel a person should explore all possibilities, I have and I prefer working with buttercream, it makes me feel good.
Iunderstand what u mean. My family and friends don't understand haha. I don't do a lot of cakes but I love looking at all the work and creativity here. This site is definately an addiction, but a good one. And the nicest people I've ever talked to. I have learned more here than I could imagine.

I don't mind it when people post their cake photos to the gallery, or even if they start a thread to show off their work.
It's the ones who go "Wah, wah, wa-a-a-h!" about nobody looking at their pictures who I would prefer not post, because those threads almost always end up in an arguement over whether we should be required to look at their pics, comment on their pics, or save them as faves.

.........cakes of mine that have rec'd the most comments/saves are the ones that I thought were nothing so special........
I so agree w/this. The ones that are super special &/or beautiful to me seem to be ignored by most of you LOL.
I come here to satisfy my love of decorating. I was forced into retirement and I soooo miss it so. This forum give me an outlet. I help where/when ever I can hoping to pass on my skills & knowledge to those of you up and coming. I spend almost all of my day (& nights!) on here.
ha ha I totally agree with not being able to predict which cakes will get the attention. The one that was saved the most (in my gallery) is one that I had the most trouble with. I thought it wasn't up to par. Lumpy fondant and all.
Then... there are others that took me FOREVER! They were incredibly difficult, full of detail, and it's as if they don't even exist. Go figure!
I agree though.. I save photos for inspiration. I might not ever make that particular cake but I definitely like elements from it, or the style, the colors, etc. Of course I do save some cakes I'm completely blown away by.
I'm glad I'm not alone though. It's nice to know there are others of you out there that need to know that fellow cakers think your cake is as awesome as you do.
