I'm making a cake for a friend of mine at work, who needs it for a retirement party for someone in her department, who is retiring.

She says this woman is very conservative. Her "one true love" is music. She's the choir director and plays piano/organ in the choir at church. She told me this thinking I could make a cake that has to do with music. She wants the cake to be pink, purple, and yellow.

I already had a cake in mind, that I had seen on here a while ago. Here's the link: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1154608.html

So, if I go with something like this...how can I tie that in with music and retirement...?

I was thinking of things like:
May retirement be music to your ears
In the melody of life, may retirement be your ...?

I don't want to make it too long, though. (I'm doing a sheet cake, I think) She wants to feed 40 people and I wasn't sure what size cakes to make for a stacked round cake to feed 40 people. I'm assuming they're going to take pieces bigger than the wilton chart allows for (and yes I've seen Eileen's chart too)

Any ideas what I could write? (how about cake sizes for round stacked cakes?)

Thanks everyone! thumbs_up.gif

In the melody of life, may retirement be the greatest symphony?

I like that last one!

I would think for a retirement party in an office a sheet might be nicer. Usually people are in a hurry to get back to their desks and sheets are less mess and easier to cut on the spot.

I agree, sheets are always easier to handle at the office. icon_biggrin.gif

"A new songs begins with retirement."

Half a sheet cake should be more than enough to feed 40 people.

Off the top of my head, here goes...

Retirement-Music to my ears
Enjoy many tuneful years
Time to sing
Time enough to make music
We'll miss your harmony
Here's to a harmonious retirement

Thanks for the great ideas!

Ok, you sold me on the sheet cake. She wants 2 flavors. Could I do two 10x10 squares? I never made a sheet cake before and I'm not really sure of the sizing...

Thanks again for your help. icon_smile.gif

A 12x18 sheetcake would be perfect.

Cut 6 down and 6 across = 36
Cut 8 down and 6 across = 48

Thanks for all of your help. What I wrote on the cake ended up being a combination of things that were suggested here so thank you! thumbs_up.gif

She loved the cake. The girl who requested it from me called me and said she was very touched and she said that I had gotten all of the music notes on there. icon_smile.gif
