Hello Everyone: Is this the same thing as an "Avatar?" I don't get it! Can someone help? Thanks so much in advance.

P.S. If you google avatars, any number of sites will come up that have approximately the right size for use on CC.
I initially found it easier to use preformatted avatars until my son showed me how to manipulate them using PhotoShop. Please don't ask me to explain.... I wouldn't know how. 
To me, the computer IS magic.
