How long can whipped frosting be left out of refrig?

Depends on the ingredients or product used....

If perishable ingredients, like whipping cream are used - the frosted cake can be "out" while being served, but no more than 2 hours (per safe food handling recommendations).

If using Rich's Bettercreme, the whipped frosting is shelf stable for 5 days:

If using butter or shortening based whipped b/c, the frosted cake wouldn't require refrigeration. (However, left-over frosting could be refrigerated for extended storage.)
