i've been asked to do a birthday cake. they want sponge/butter cake split into 4 layers with SMBC and covered in fondant. does anyone know of a good moist recipe that is homemade and not box?

Sponge cakes are not exactly moist to begin with, which is why many bakers brush syrup or liqueur on them.

As far as recipes, your best bet might be to look for one on

www.epicurious.com or www.starchefs.com

but remember that the measurements will be in US Standard, not metric.
