I am making a birthday cake for a friend and want to put a 1/2 sports ball (to be a balloon) on top of a 9x13 sheet cake. It's ok with me if the "balloon" is cut with the cake (not removed and served separately). Do I need a cakeboard and dowel/straw supports? Or can I just place the 1/2 ball directly on top of the sheet without support? Wasn't sure if the 1/2 would be too heavy. Thanks!

It probably would be ok--would essentially be like a two layer cake.
But use your own judgement if the ball is especially heavy or deep. And all the same cake right? Not Italian cream cake sitting on top of a cake mix cake but both the same density. Probably would be fine.
