Shoe Box Cake... How Do You Get Crisp Sides?

I'll be covering the cake w/ fondant. I want ithe sides to look crisp. Any tips on doing that?

Make sure the buttercream underneath is smooth first. Then use fondant smoothers for your sides. That should help.

You can also make the panels out of a fondant gumpaste mixture, let it harden and then put it on, you'll have seams ont he edges, but it will look very crisp and box like.

Thank you for the replies... I really appreciate them! I don't have time to do the panels... I've been struggling w/ a GP shoe. I'll try to keep the crumb coat smooth.
