My 1St Gp Shoe - Love It! + A Tip For Painting On Gp/fondant

So my mom turned 50 recently. She loves shoes and I've been wanting to try my hand at a gumpaste shoe. The cutters I've seen are either too expensive or too small. I wanted it to look life-size (because the cake part was a shoebox) so I actually bought a cheap high heel (5 bucks!) and cut off the top straps. I covered it with cardstock and used that as my support for the sole. I think it worked great.
My tip for painting on gumpaste or fondant: I hated how sometimes it looks tacky/shiny and smudges a lot - a problem when handling the shoe. Cornstarch generously sprinkled on top and then dusted off solved the prob. I did it on both the shoe and the fondant cupcakes.
Here's my picture of the cake with the shoe and the cupcakes.
Oh wow, that turned out Great!! I can't wait to do my first shoe. I think it has a more realistic arch than the molds you can buy. I always think they have too much arch, a foot wouldn't fit on those it would seem
My daughter will be turning 21 soon and I would LOVE to make this cake for her.... Please send the instructions. Thanks
That is incredible! You did a beautiful job - that's probably the nicest shoe set up I've seen.
That is one heck of a good looking cake, Wished someone baked me one like that when i turned 50 great job and the cupcakes are awesome i will put this one in my favs for sure
Very nice! You can tell it was a cake crafted out of love. I like the details like the pearls surrounding the plaque, etc.
What an awesome 1st shoe! I was admiring this cake earlier! You did an incredible job!
I just bought the "fabulous shoe kit", and was terribly disappointed in the size... its tiny!
I may have to try the cheap $5 shoe idea too!
Again, excellent work!

I agree completely!
So...do you paint, let the fondant dry, and then dust on the cornstarch does it absorb the moisture from the paint? Stupid questions probably, but this has always been an issue for me too, and I am hopeful this will be a good fix for me!
This is absolutely beautiful. The colors great. I know your mom loved and was proud. Keep up the great work.
