I'm teaching a group of kids this afternoon some basic cake decorating. Each child will get their own 6-inch round cake (1.5-2 inches high) to ice, decorate using the star tip, and then put a star border around it. How much icing do you think I would need per cake? The Wilton website says 3 cups for a double layer, so do you think 1.5 cups would be enough?

If your planning to have the kids ice and decorate....plan on MORE frosting than the guidelines show you! I do 4H kids and you can count on using lots more with kid hands/messiness than any adult....well MOST ANY adult...hehehehe. I would just make up extra and store it in a zip lock baggie...don't put it all out at once but open up as needed. Then what ever is not 'kid contaminated' you can put up for later!
