I was going to make a 2 tiered cake for my daughter's 1st bday. It will be my first attempt. How tall should each tier be?

Assuming each layer of your 2-layer tier is 2", then the tier will be 4".

This is also pretty much the industry standard, since most cake-cutting guides assume a 4" tall cake.

Definitely 4". As Indy stated it's what's assumed in all the serving charts and cake is usually served on either a bread and butter plate or a dessert plate which are usually5" or 6" in diameter. Lay the slice on it's side and it fills the plate nicely with room for a fork.
