I got my First Place Blue Ribbon at the CA State Fair 2008 for my Blue Purse Cake.. and 2nd Place for the King Arthur Flour Baby Cakes Cupcakeks Competition... these were all judged mainly on taste. Both the blue cake and the cupcakes. Blue Cake is Chocolate Italian Cream Cake. Cupcake were Ricotta Marzipan cupcakes. thanks for looking
You said they were judged mostly on taste...so that means they taste better than they look???? How is that possible?? THEY ARE PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!
The judges liked the cakes better than the out side decoration. This was not a cake decorating contest but there are no rules as to how much decoration you put on your cakes. Thank you. I always aim for taste and looks. thanks
You did an amazing bit of work on both your entries.
Just love your blue bag, stunning!
Congratulations!!
omigosh, great looking cakes, & tasted great, too? way to go!! (** i envy you ** -- in a good way)
They're fantastic. The purse is wonderful with the braiding and the bamboo. And those cupcakes looks so wonderfully decadent! Congrats!

My thoughts exactly!
Thank you very much.. I'm just happy that I got what was given to me. One judge was somewhat putting my blue cake "down', not really bashing, maybe it's because the cakes around it were not decorated and looked so plain. I was just a bit disappointed that such comment would come from a professional chef. I expected a better and unbiased comment from him. But that's alright, I got my Blue Ribbon, and I know I did not violate any rules and others loved it. I just told him "see you next year Buddy, same time same place!"
Wow these are just beautiful. I am going to do a purse cake for my sisters birthday and I hope mine turns out half as beautiful as yours. Congratulations.
Wow...They look amazing.... I particularly love the cupcakes... I was just wondering, how do you make the topping on the cupcake?

Hi Elin,
thank you.
Those are very simple.. same thing when you make Peanut Brittle..
1 cup sugar and 1/4 c water... let that boil on low heat W/OUT stirring until amber color. It will crystalize if you touch it while boiling. Then using a spoon, make designs on Silpat or parchment then let it cool.. it is very hard like hard candy when cool.
