Covering A Cake In Modeling Chocolate

I read somewhere that you can cover a cake in modeling chocolate and it gives the same effect of fondant. When the cake is covered how does the chocolate do later? Does it dry hard or does it remain somewhat soft? I have a wedding cake in October that is an outside wedding, the bride wants brown icing so I was thinking of offering this but need some more info before it's something I will try.
