This might sound crazy and maybe a little gross - but it used only for this - it will work out fine. "DOG NAIL CLIPPERS" They cut right through and don't leave any jagged edges. Just don't get them confused with the ones for the doggies.
I was thinking this too! I got a new pair just for dowels.

i'm no david ducovney(lol janh)...but i found this link about those straws...
i bought bubble straws on ebay the other day, not to bad I think was 4.00 with shipping for 100 straws can get 2 out of each for 4 in cake.
I was watching Charmed City Cakes one nite and they use these giant straws. I emailed them as to where they order them, but got no reply. I purchase some of these to see how they work. I hate cutting those darn wooden ones. Thanks for the info.

thanks sharon! i have the same question as some the previous posters, where can you get bubble straws?also,my dh brought me home a cake decorating book from the library the other day (by toba garrett) and in that book she says she uses lollypop sticks, has anybody else used those? just wondering.
thanks again everybody!!!!
Plastic lollipop stick might work, but paper ones would just get soggy and your cake would fall.
I used to use some unused dog nail clippers, until my dad showed me something he uses to cut thick electrical wire. They are big plier type things but they do the job fast!
I wonder why they dont sell these straws at the local cake decorating supply stores. They would make (decorators) lives so much easier. I love this site, its so informative and a good source of great decorating ideas. A lot of the decorators on this site is truly amazing at this craft. I've learned and have grown just visiting here daily. Thanks to all of you who share your great pictures and dont mind helping when asked.
I use a very small hack saw with a fine blade to cut my wooden dowels. My mom actually gave it to my husband for his woodworkign but I quickly stole it away....

...wood cutters. I got mine from AJ Wright. Its like a Michaels. They are in the wood hobby section. They look like pliers but they are to cut wood. They are about $20 but I had a coupon for 50% off! They work great and you adjust the size depending on what size dowels you have. They work great.
