I decorated black T-shirts for the family when my husband turned 40. One had a tombstone on it (I know morbid) saying:
Here lies (insert name here)
Bless his soul
Turning 40
Took it's toll
Can't remember the others right now.

This site has some cute ones...

Here are some:

Forty is the old age of youth; fifty is the youth of old age.

Forty isnât old, if youâre a tree

Life begins at forty.

Be wise with speed; A fool at forty is a fool indeed.

To me, old age is always 15 years older than I am.

At 20 years of age the will reigns; at 30 the wit; at 40 the judgement.

A diplomat is a man who always remembers a womanâs birthday but never remembers her age.

Youth has no age.

For all the advances in medicine, there is still no cure for the common birthday.

Pleased to look forward, pleased to look behind, and count each birthday with a grateful mind.

Youâre not 40, youâre eighteen with 22 years experience.

When I was younger, I could remember anything, whether it happened or not.

Age is a high price to pay for maturity.

What most persons consider as virtue, after the age of 40 is simply a loss of energy.

The âI just woke upâ face of your 30âs is the âall day longâ face of your 40âs

At the age of 20, we donât care what the world thinks of us; at 30, we worry about what it is thinking of us; at 40, we discover that it wasnât thinking of us at all.

The best years of a womanâs life - the ten years between 39 and 40

Maturity has more to do with what types of experiences youâve had, and what youâve learned from them, and less to do with how many birthdays youâve celebrated.

May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.

Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young.

The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.

No wise man ever wished to be younger.

We know weâre getting old when the only thing we want for our birthday is not to be reminded of it.

Once you hit forty you start adding letters âiâm 39A this yearâ

The first symptom of love in a young man is shyness; the first symptom in a woman, itâs boldness.

When a woman is talking to you, listen to what she says with her eyes.

This wine is forty years old. It certainly doesnât show its age.

Happiness is good health and a bad memory.

There are days of oldness, and then one gets young again

Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.

Middle age is when you still believe youâll feel better in the morning.

What could be more beautiful than a dear old lady growing wise with age? Every age can be enchanting, provided you live within it.

Itâs sad to grow old, but nice to be wise.

I think it depends on the look you are going for. I did Fabulous at 40 on a cake. Here is a link to the picture. I used stars for a more classy look.
