I'm trying to come up with a simple, yet creative design for my mother-in-law's birthday cake.

My experience is quite minor compared with many on this site, but I have taken the Wilton courses 1, 2, and the Fondant and Gum paste one (Course 3 starts tomorrow), so I have experience with fondant and gum paste.

I made my father-in-law's birthday cake, and they really liked it (see here: http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/emrldsky/Cakes/IMG_1730_resized.jpg I didn't think about the black gel icing running..d'oh!), but I'm thinking something a bit more...elegant for my MIL.

I really like the simplistic and elegant look of luelue1971 Dots cake (http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1187293.html), but would like some other ideas.

Oh, and I'm not sure what my MIL's favorite colors are (yet). icon_wink.gif

Do you have any cakes from CC saved to your favorites? Your MIL's birthday is a perfect occasion to try something from your favorites! icon_smile.gif

You make an excellent point. icon_smile.gif I'm only a bit worried because no matter what, I will get unconditional praise (*sarcasm* I know, it's so tough being supported by your family AND your in-laws icon_wink.gif ).

I keep going back to this: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_43545.html

She's a HUGE Lucy fan and would love it, but I'm not entirely sure of myself, lol. Best thing to do is jump in and do it, right?

I've actually decided to try something a little...less complicated, lol. She loves Minnie too, and we all (my husband, myself, and my in-laws) just got back from Disney World a couple of weeks ago.

So, I'm basing it off this: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_1176251.html but I'm using all fondant, not butter cream (don't want red teeth). I just submitted an order for Satin Ice (choco pan was a bit pricey) in red.

I think she's going to LOVE it. icon_biggrin.gif
