I was thinking tonight that Memorial day lends itself perfectly to a quilt cake. Has anybody ever done one for Memorial Day/ 4th of July, or do you have any ideas for one?
Thanks!
Katie
i have never done a quilt cake but i think it would be a wonderful idea. i have made a cake though where i "patchworked" the design together, which in a way kind of reminds me of a quilt , somewhat. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1205408 ..my suggestion would be to use square, diamond, circle, triangle cutters and to use a stiching wheel to mark the thread stiches. you could even cut some of those shapes and over lap them to make a symmetrical design. it might be neat to use reds whites and blues for the holiday. even pastels or natural tones would be nice though too.
oops, sorry, i was assuming that you'd be using fondant. had you planned on that or just bc?
here is one i found in the gallery, i think it is a spin on an older design, by collette peters. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=34716 looks like it was done in bc, using color flow /royal icing for decorations. you could also use chocolate transfers.
I like this concept. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1196880
I would just suggest look up memorial day/4th of July quilts/blocks to get ideas. i agree w/ melysa about the stitching wheel to mark the stitches & using cutters to mark out your "blocks"
ETA: You could do the wedding ring in red, white & blue. I think it would be pretty easy.
i've done about 5 of them.
here are some that i found on flickr.
