And if so, how does it taste with no butter in it? I always tend to like buttercream with butter in it better than all shortening based recipes.
Has anybody tried replacing some of the shortening with butter? If so, did it still crust and how did it work out?
I have used half butter and half shortening before.
It tasted better and it was much easier to work with. However, it did turn a creamy ivory color instead of being bright white. I still like it better though!!
I recently started using Indydebi's buttercream recipe and I love it. I use all shortening and I love the way it smooths. The taste of the vanilla is just delicious. It is actually the first buttercream with shortening that I have tried that doesn't leave that greasy feeling taste in my mouth.

I just made some yesterday for the first time and I liked it. I subbed 1/2 cup of the shortening for butter, and it had a very nice consistency.
I love this recipe and totally agree it doesn't taste greasey. I used the Princess cookie dough emulsion and LOVE the taste. It's great to work with.
IndyDebi's icing is great it is the main icing I use when I need a good crust on my cakes. And it also great to pipe the decorations.
