I'm looking for a few good recipes that will work for sculpting cakes. I know the Maderia is recommened, but my family isn't very fond of it. Thanks for any advice.

if you do box mixes and don't mind doctoring them, go into the recipe section here and do a search for "extender"...not only will it make your box mix taste like scratch, but it will add more volume to the recipe AND "dense" it up enough to make it more structurally sound for 3d cakes.

my favorite is the one with a cup of sugar, cup of flour, dash of salt, the mix, 3 eggs, 1 cup of sourcream, and a melted stick of butter!

I like the pound cake recipes in The Cake Mix Doctor books.
