i want to try venturing out past my fanci-foil cake boards. what other kind of things can you cover them with? i was thinking wrapping paper, but do you need to put contact paper or something else over it to avoid grease spots? If you have ideas on creating interesting cake boards, please share!

Know the feeling.....
I started using scrapbooking paper covered with matte finish contact paper and have had good results. I buy the contact paper at Hobby Lobby (cheaper than Walmart even). Have used the clear, shiny contact paper also. Works just as well and both are great to wipe icing off of icon_lol.gif

you can use wrapping paper and yes I would cover with clear contact paper and that will make it washable and reuseable...you can also use fabric and cover that with clear contact paper.....wallpaper works great and there are tons of designs.......you can also use ceramic tiles (no need to cover....just wash and reuse) pieces of mirror work great....put it on a sheet of plywood if it's a big cake......the weight could break it....you could also use one of those glass blocks they sell that people put in shower walls and bathrooms and stuff....they look really cool with a strand of christmas lights inside or some flowers.....almos looks like a glowing ice block or something.........there's really no end to what you can do.......craft stores and fabric stores have so many different fringes and stuff with beads dangling, etc. that you can use around the sides of the cake boards too......sky is the limit.......and your imagination too......have fun......get creative

check out this site too....tons of contact papers with different patterns and free shipping to boot

I found Christmas vinyl tablecloths just today for .50 each! They are huge and will cover a lot of cake boards next year. I also found ribbon, etc on sale. It's hidden in my car until hubby goes to work....He'd have a cow if he knew I was buying more stuff. I'm out of room already!

I've used wrapping paper and scrapbook paper but covered both with the clear contact paper too.

I like the idea of getting the plastic table cloths and trying that.

I was thinking about cake boards yesterday! And thinking about using something that you can reuse in the future. The only thing that popped into my head was plexi glas but I don't think it would support a cake! so does anyone have any ideas for what we can use to reuse and save a little money?

When using materials like wrapping paper and vinyl tablecloths, keep in mind that these items may not be "food safe". I don't think it's going to harm anyone, but it is something you need to be aware of.

I cover most of my cake boards in aluminum foil before covering the boards in royal icing coloured to match the colour scheme on my cake. Works like a charm and is cheap and food safe. I finish the edge of the board with a ribbon. I have also used fondant where I wanted to inlay patterns, the race car cake in my pictures is on a fondant covered board.

I use formica board (kitchen counter material) for my large cupcake cakes. It's food safe and can be cut to size. It's reuseable and super sturdy.

some people use a large, glazed ceramic tile. Works well, I hear.

I cover foamcore board with either wrapping paper or fabric (sometimes that's cheaper than wrapping paper where I live), then I cover that with clear cellophane and usually a ribbon around the edge. I just cringe when I look at pictures of my earlier cakes on boards covered in tin foil-and I thought I was being fancy!

I've covered boards in fondant, but most of the time I use the Wilton Fancy foil. To match a design or dress up a cake, I use gift wrap, or fabric and ALWAYS cover that with the clear, food-safe celephane. Usually, I finish off the edges with ribbon.

Wrapping paper I always cover with clear contact paper. As far as the tablecloths - I did check the package for 'food safe' and I didn't see it on there. I can't imagine that it isn't, but you have a good point.
