I want to make a football, baseball and basketball out of rice crispie treats and wrap in fondant. After I mold it into the shape I want, do I ice it before I put the fondant on it to get a smooth surface?

I do just because the icing fills in the nooks and crannies that sometimes show in the fondant. I think it give it a smoother look.

When I make something out of RKT I mold it then put a thin coat of BC (kind of fills in the gaps too) and then I put on a thicker coat of fondant.

HTH!
