I just started decorating cakes & my daughter's first b-day is next sunday. I am stumped as to which frosting I should use. I would like for it to be white, shinny, and some what hard when it dries. Can someone please recommend what I should use?? Thanks in advance for any tips! I'll be sure to post the pic.

Angela,

I love the Buttercream Dream recipe on here.

With this recipe, I usually only use 1 tsp of the clear vanilla extract and 3-4 Tbsp of milk depending on the consistency you need.

I sometimes add water when I need to thin it out for icing a cake.

This icing is easy to make, use and it crusts too.

Good luck and do post pictures.

You also want the butter to sit out and get to room temperature so it's easier to mix.

You can even make the icing this weekend and put it in the fridge to use for next weekend, that way you have less to do next Friday & Saturday.

Just let it sit out for a little bit on the counter and you then re-mix with your spatula and you'll be good to go.

fiddlesticks,

Corn syrup is a good idea...I have been using Wilton piping gel for writing.

fiddlesticks,

I'm sorry! I meant to say I add piping gel to buttercream to write with. It makes it easier to write with too. I have never tried corn syrup. icon_smile.gif Sorry about that. icon_smile.gif
