Hi everyone,I'm in the process of preparing to bake a chocolate cake which calls for vegetable oil. Can I use a melted crisco stick instead or will it effect the cake. Please help!!!!!

Ditto what Kaychristensen said. What are you starting with? Some omit the oil altogether, I sub out for applesauce.

You can sub melted butter/margarine for the oil or applesauce. What do you have on hand???

I know you can sub applesauce:

http://www.ochef.com/baking_substitutions.htm

You could also try using mayo or sour cream for the oil.

Do you have any margarine or butter, melted would work.

Applesauce would be better but not sure. I am assuming you don't have melted butter am I correct? If you do that would definately work just not sure about the Crisco.

Or diet soda. Then you don't need the oil or eggs

Thanks everyone. Its a scratch chocolate cake recipe. I do have margarine on hand just wasn't sure if I could substitute. I'll try that and hope it works. I was scared to use the crisco. As always, you all are lifesavers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made a white cake this way with seven up. The kid I made it for loved it. Still puffed up just as good even without the eggs because of the carbonation, I believe.

Margarine is pretty much oil with butter flavoring and maybe a few other things we really don't want to know about! I sub margarine for oil alot because of the "extra" taste, your cake should turn out just fine! thumbs_up.gif

I just stumbled on that recipe tonight. I remember we use to make cola cake all the time when I was younger. I haven't made it in years. But I am going to have to try it with the diet. It says it is ok for diabetics. I thought I would make one for my grandma. We also use to make mayo cake. Both were from scratch but the recipe I found you doctor tthe cake mix.

Wait just a minute! How does this soda substitution thing work? Say I grab a box of DH. What do I add? What do I replace? Will it work for all flavors, because they have different additions???

I make coca-cola cake quite often...my recipe calls for 4 eggs and lots of sugar. Does anyone have the recipe that doesn't call for the sugar???? Please post it! How awesome!

I took a box of white BC cake mix and poured a (can 12oz) of seven-up and mixed for the amount of time printed on the box. I didn't add anything else to it. When you pour the soda into the mix it will foam up lots, so make sure you use a big enough bowl.

For icing, I made a glaze of powdered sugar and seven-up.

As long as you think the flavor combination will be good, you can use whatever you like. The soda doesn't provide an abundance of flavor, just a little something that makes you question what its made of. I think I might try a chocolate cake with cherry-coke or cherry-pepsi, just for fun. Mountain Dew might be good with a lemon cake.

OK, so let me see if I got this right....
You can replace the eggs and oil for Diet Soda, how much soda?
And you can use applesauce instead of oil? Same amount??
Please let me know, I'm really interested in trying this! Thanks!

If I understand right, applesauce to oil is equal, and 1 mix plus 12oz soda equals one yummy cake. Right?

Clarification:

These are TWO seperate cakes. When making a normal cake I always sub out equal amounts applesauce for the oil that is called for. So, if recipe calls for 1/2 cup oil, I use 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce. Don't want to add any more sugar than is really necessary. icon_rolleyes.gif Gotta cut back on sugar somewhere.

On a completely different cake, instead of oil AND eggs, I will mix in one 12oz can of soda. Thats its, nothing else is added. Cake mix and soda.

I hope this makes sense to everyone. I'm not sure if you were understanding they are two seperate cakes. I've never made with diet soda so I don't know if the "diet" would ruin any part of the cake. I do not believe it would though. [/i]

So what flavor of cake do you use for the cola or pepsi? I would like to try that with the diet pepsi too.
