Please help. I am doing a train and train station cake and using a 4x2 board. I don't know what to cover it with so that it does not look bad. I am going to have a forest on one side of the train station, a birthday party on another. Train tracks with 4 trains and a lake on the other side of the tracks.
DO I cover the cake with fondant and try to spray paint (i can oly use the wilton) or do i use something else. I don't want to even think of how much fondant i have to make to cover such a big board. This cake is becoming very expensive to make. I don't know what to do.
thanks for your help guys.

You might think about covering it with contact paper that looks like wood so it would look like part of the platform of a train station. Also maybe even a clean new welcome mat that looks like grass. I am grabbing at straws here so if I come up with any other ideas I will let you know.

It sounds like it's going to be spectacular! Do you mind posting the pic on this thread once it's done?
Instead of using fondant, you can die some sweetened shaved coconut green with powder food coloing (just put it all in a ziplock and "shake, shake, shake") icon_lol.gif This way, it will look like grass, and be less expensive and time consuming for you. You'll need a small lip around the board, so possibly some wired ribbon, or painted dowels stacked two or three high to look like a makeshift fence? I hope this helps!

I would agree with this suggestion. 4x2 is WAY too huge for fondant, and a roll of Fanci-Foil I don't think is 24 inches wide - I'm pretty sure it's only 18.

You could get any color contact paper you want to....If your base cake is all one color (or if the sides are anyway) you might want to match the paper to that color so what's going on ATOP the cake will "pop" visually.

It sounds like a fabulous idea and I'm going to watch this topic so I'll be able to see the finished result! thumbs_up.gif

You can also cover in scrapbook paper or wrapping paper and then cover that in clear contact.

You could cover the board with green felt and then cover that with contact paper. Your cake sounds great. Good Luck.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I am going to chop off 6 inches off the board. It is way to big for me. what was i thinking?!!!
I decided to go ahead and cover the board with fondant. Made 4 batches today. I think it should be enough. I have to paint the board in different colors because of the diff scenaries. Hope it works.
I can't wait for this to be over. Have been stressing over this cake for a month.

I tried to get contact paper, but it was like $18.00 for a roll. Is that right? It costs me about $2.50 to make a batch of fondant (toba garrets).

Try target in the home organization isle - just got a roll (can't remember how long it is but it's substantial) for $5.99... it's solid white though...

Walmart also has contact paper in the aisle with the shelf liners. I think it's about $5. I use it to cover any templates or patterns I use so they don't get yukky.

Hi everyone!
The cake is finished, delivered and eaten. I do not know how to attach the pics here. They are in my album. Thanks for all your suggestions.
By the way, this thing took me over 30 hours to do. I almost gave up when I had to do the engine for the 3rd time. (only because i had to cover the cake 2 times. the fondant was not cooperating). I made 7 batches of fondant for this cake not counting the fondant used to make the figurines.
